Something Unique

However, the overall trend within the top 100 shows that parents are increasingly drawn to more unique names. Just below the traditional favourites in the top ten, there are a few more distinctive choices gaining attention. Among the most unusual names for boys are Cuthbert, Crispin, Awesome, and Beckham. For girls, Orchid, Poem, Sicily, and Everest all made the top 100, though each was used fewer than five times. These names strike a balance between boldness and individuality, reflecting a growing desire among parents to choose meaningful names that stand out from the crowd.

Pop Culture

Celebrity and pop culture have also played a significant role in shaping the list of popular names. For instance, the name Margot has seen a surge in popularity, inspired by actress Margot Robbie, whose fame and iconic roles have captivated global audiences. Similarly, the name Otis has gained attention, influenced by the beloved character Otis Milburn from the hit Netflix series Sex Education, whose relatable personality and storyline have resonated with viewers.

Victorian names are back

Names that were popular in the 1980s and ’90s are gradually falling out of favour. Classic millennial girl names such as Erin, Kelsey, Chelsea, and Alexis are all experiencing a slow decline in popularity. One of the most notable examples is Jamie, which was a top-ranking name between 1974 and 1996. However, by 2024, it had dropped a significant 320 places, reflecting a broader shift away from names that once defined a generation. In contrast, many parents are now reaching further back in time, embracing vintage and Victorian-era names such as Clara, Eleanor, Mabel, and Florence. Names that evoke a sense of timelessness and charm, showing a growing interest in more traditional, historical naming trends.

Royal Names

Royal baby names also appear to be declining in popularity, with traditional choices such as Catherine, Anne, Philip, Albert, and Edward all seeing a noticeable drop in usage. Among them, Catherine experienced the most significant decline, falling an impressive 221 spots in the rankings. Once considered timeless and regal, these names now seem to be giving way to more modern, unique, or culturally diverse alternatives, reflecting a shift in naming preferences among new parents.

That’s a wrap on the 2024 baby name trends! From timeless classics to bold, unique picks inspired by pop culture, this year’s list shows how parents are choosing names that stand out and hold meaning. Whether you’re expecting or just curious, it’s clear that baby naming is more creative than ever. Stay tuned to see what names make waves next year!
